TWO WEDGWOOD & BENTLEY BLACK BASALT TABLE ORNAMENTS, AN ATTIC OENOCHOE EWER AND HANDLED KRATER URN, ETRURIA, POSSIBLY 1769-1780, black porcelain, comprising a Neoclassical ewer with a fluttering petal mouth and sinuous whiplash handle issued from the horns of a faun mask applied to an austere molded band, the pinched banded neck to bell form shoulders on an amphorae form body upheld on a tapered socle and circular foot, raised on a square plinth with bas-relief Greek meander pattern, the base impressed, "Wedgwood & Bentley Etruria," with a bronzed patina finish, height: 9 3/4", diameter: 3"; together with a lidded double handled urn having a ball finial lid over wilted petal chinoiserie hat form lid over a rolled mouth and above a bas-relief striped tapered neck joined by two Bachic faun masks with protruding whiplash horn handles, festooned with juicy grape bunches among leafy vines, the tapered chalice form body ends with acanthus leaf furls, raised on a bas-relief striped socle and circular foot with a wreath of acanthus leaves, raised on a square egg-and-dart base, impressed, "Wedgwood & Bentley," height: 9", diameter: 4 1/2". Provenance: Estate of Robert William Guynn, Houston, Texas.
Condition
The lidded example has repairs to one handle. Both pieces have small chips on their bases.
