Description
Noel Rockmore
(American/Louisiana, 1928-1995)
"Street Drillers: Men with Air Hammers", Jan. 1965
oil on canvas
signed and dated lower left, titled, with a "John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation" label, "Greer, 67th St." in chalk, and "E. L. Borenstein Collection" catalogue sheet en verso.
Framed.
50" x 40", framed 56-3/4" x 46-3/4"
Provenance: Previously in E. Lorenz "Larry" Borenstein's Collection, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Notes: Always a temperamental artist, Rockmore left New Orleans and returned to New York City where his relationship with Harry Salpeter Gallery fell apart. In 1961, he began exhibiting his work at the prominent Greer Gallery in New York City. Evidently, Rockmore submitted this painting to the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fund.
In 1964, Larry Borenstein commissioned Rockmore to paint a series on the "living legend" musicians who played nightly at Preservation Hall in the French Quarter. Despite the success of the Preservation Hall series and much to the disappointment of Borenstein, Rockmore in 1965 began to focus on new series including construction sites and shipyards.
