U.S. Model 1822/28 Contract Musket by Marine T. Wickham with Bayonet, Philadelphia, 1831. 42 in., .70 caliber barrel, the breech marked 'US/LS' over 'P' within a sunken cartouche, the breech plug tang marked '1831'; flat lock plate with convex tail marked 'PHILA/1831' and below the brass pan 'US/M.T.WICKHAM'; walnut stock with traces of an oval cartouche behind the side plate and 'IB' below the trigger guard; iron furniture of proper form, steel rammer with button head and threaded end; the socket bayonet with bridge over the slot, blade marked 'US/EP'. Musket overall lg. 57 5/8 in. CONDITION: Iron toned to dark brown; lock functions properly; stock has a repaired break through the lock area and scattered dings, dents, and scuffs; bayonet toned to brown. Footnotes: Provenance Collected in San Diego, California, from Stan Middleton, and may have seen service in the Mexican-American War. Note Marine T. Wickham signed a contract on January 27, 1829, to produce 8,750 stands of Model 1822/28 muskets to be delivered at a rate of 750 per year for five years at the cost of $12.25 per stand delivered to the Frankford Arsenal. Records indicate that Wickham delivered 1,200 stands in 1831 (Peter A.
