British Pattern 1778 Sea Service Musket, late 18th century. 36 3/4 in., .80 caliber barrel with ring decorated breech, corroded Tower Ordnance proof marks on top of the barrel and '*/W' barrel maker's mark on the left side; convex lock plate with pointed tail stamped 'TOWER' and below the pan with crown over 'GR' and crown government ownership mark, the plate and cock with engraved double line border; walnut stock with 1805-dated storekeeper's mark on the right side of the butt and inspector's marks below the trigger guard in the rammer channel; brass furniture of proper form including a sheet brass butt plate with lobe tang, trigger guard with round finial, flat side plate with tail, and two rammer pipes sized for a wood rammer, with sling swivels and a steel rammer with flaring head and coarsely threaded end. Overall lg. 52 5/8 in. CONDITION: Barrel and lock toned to dark brown and with scattered light underlying pitting; lock has an American replaced steel and a replaced internal bridle screw, but functions properly: stock has some repaired/glued cracks in the fore end and scattered dings and dents; brass toned to dark yellow/brown, trigger guard has a screw through the finial in addition to the two regular retaining pins.
