Description
Scottish Basket-Hilted Backsword, mid-18th century. Iron hilt with characteristic russet iron guard of rounded bars framing fretted panels incised with lines and pierced with stylized hearts and circles, the main panels centered on saltires, the side panels (one partly detached) each set above a 'ram's horn', a pair of fore-guards, bun-shaped pommel partly incised with parallel lines, and spirally fluted fishskin-covered wooden grip (some worming, binding missing); tapering straight single-edged blade with narrow fuller along the back for most of its length on each side; and leather scabbard with linear engraved locket and chape, the former with frog-hook (steel parts with surface rust and pitting).
