Roman Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. Inscribed Roman tablet, most likely from a small grave or shrine marker. Inscribed in Latin in 3 lines of text "Q. NUMIS/ AEDICULAM /POSTERIS Q." Due to the incomplete nature of the plaque, we have only a general idea of the translation. "Q." is a common abbreviation of the name Quintus, but could have another meaning, such as "which or "who" probably referring to the deceased. The partial word "numis" could refer to the ground or divine power. If "aediculam" is the full word this could translate to a small shrine or dedicated area. "Posteris" translates as "coming after" which is often used to refer to future descendants / posterity. A speculative translation from the remaining words could be: "To the gods of the deceased this small plaque (shrine) is dedicated for posterity." Size: 5.75" L x .75" W x 4.375" H (14.6 cm x 1.9 cm x 11.1 cm)
