Description
Wooden Yoruba Osanmasinmi (sacred ram's head), Yoruba peoples, Owo group, Southern Nigeria. A sculpted ram's head was a component of the altars of high-ranking officials and leaders in the Owo region of Nigeria. The use of this iconography possibly relates to altars in the earlier traditions of Benin, or possibly to a shared earlier ancestral source. 11.5 x 7 x 7 inches, plinth 4.25 x 8 x 9 inches. Provenance: from the estate of Leon and Jane Arkus. Leon was the Director of the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, from 1969 to 1980.
Condition
