Frederic Roux was from the Roux family of Marsailles, a family of marine painters and hydrographers. He was the third child of Antoine and Rose Roux and as a child showed great skills as a painter and studied under Jospeh Vernet. Frederic Roux was the talented of his family and was a popular painter for American ship captains. Admiral Jean-Baptiste Philibert Willaumuz commissioned 40 watercolors of his vessel's to be painted by Roux which are now hung at the Musee de la Marine in Paris.

This beautiful maritime watercolor shows the Vaucluse entering the port of Havre under Captain Raymond Leeman Gilchrist of Liverpool. The ship is flying under the American and French flag. The lighthouse of the port of Havre is clearly visible. There are other sailing vessels in the background.
