Description
Rare cased Purple Heart awarded to Ulyess B. Walker, Serial No. 38496380, a Black porter who enlisted in New Orleans on July 14, 1943, and was killed in action, the details unknown to us. The award is period engraved with Walker's name on the reverse and is set in the original case with a ribbon bar and lapel pin. A second cased Purple Heart, also named to Walker and of slightly different construction and engraving, is also included. It may have been sent to replace the first example which could have been thought to have been lost in the mail, or lost by the family. Both in very good condition and emanate from an American colonel's prestigious collection of Black militaria.
