Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Periods, Dynasties 21 through 26, ca. 1077 to 535 BCE. Mold-made, lentoid-shaped flask of light green faience, thin neck, flared spout and two small lug handles that might be an abstract representation of baboons. The collar of each side is decorated in three rows of impressed chevrons and geometric patterns. Each side of flask is decorated with hieroglyphs. New Year's flask were so named because such flasks once held a liquid used in a ceremony to mark the beginning of the new agricultural year, which began in late summer, when the Nile River began to flood.
