3 Generations of Vanderbilt Family Pictured in CDVs, Cabinet Cards, Prints, 4 Pcs
A small archive of cartes de visite, cabinet cards, and prints depicting three generations of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt's great industrial family. Expected wear commensurate with age throughout; overall very good to near fine condition. Please see catalog photos for more information relating to individual item condition. Four pieces total.
The lot includes:
William "Billy" Henry Vanderbilt
1. A carte de visite of William "Billy" Henry Vanderbilt (1821-1885), the eldest son of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, after New York-based photographer Abraham Bogardus (1822-1908). The albumen print photograph is mounted on a stock card with rounded corners. An elaborate backstamp can be found verso reading: "Bogardus. / B / Photographic and Portrait / Galleries, / Broadway 872 Cor. 18th St. / New York." Expected wear including isolated surface scuffs; inscribed "Vanderbilt" verso in a collector's hand. 2.5" x 4.125." Accompanied by a barcoded storage sleeve from Smythe.
2. A cabinet card of William "Billy" Henry Vanderbilt after Abraham Bogardus, mounted on a fancy gilt-edged ebonized stock card. Bogardus's credentials are printed along the bottom margin. Inscribed by a former collector below the photo recto and verso. Expected isolated surface wear. 4.125" x 6.375."
William "Willie" Kissam Vanderbilt I
3. A print, possibly a modern reproduction, of William "Willie" Kissam Vanderbilt I (1849-1920), third son of William Henry Vanderbilt, complete with facsimile signature. Trimmed to an overall size of 4.625" x 6.625."
William "Willie K" Kissam Vanderbilt II
4. A cabinet card of William "Willie K" Kissam Vanderbilt II (1878-1944), eldest son of William Kissam Vanderbilt, mounted on a cream colored card. A portion of a press photo caption mentioning Vanderbilt, Florida, and cars is affixed to the top verso; the caption bears the name of New York journalist Maude De Haven Ogan (1877-1922). Inscribed by a former collector verso. Slightly curled and with isolated staining. 4.25" x 6.5."
