Kennedy Assassination Signed Pairing- Ruby & Leavelle
A pair of two items individually signed by nightclub owner Jack Ruby and Dallas detective Jim Leavelle, including an endorsed bank check and signed photograph. Exhibits expected wear, including slight surface creasing and uneven margins throughout. Else, very good with bold signatures.
The lot includes:
1.) Jack Ruby signed bank check for the Silver Spur nightclub, dated October 20, 1950 from the Mercantile National Bank in Dallas, TX. Paying to the order of an unknown recipient the sum of 300 dollars and signed "Jack L. Ruby" at lower right. Expected cancellation punctures present, not affecting signature. 3" x 8.25".
2.) Detective Jim Leavelle signed 8" x 10" photographic print, depicting Ruby approaching murder suspect Lee Harvey Oswald seconds before pulling the trigger. Boldly signed and dated at middle as "James R. Leavelle/ Dallas Detective/ 11/29/98".
James Robert Leavelle (1920-2019) was a Dallas Police Department homicide detective. Two days after the assassination of President Kennedy, Lee Harvey Oswald was meant to be transferred from the city jail to the county jail. He was handcuffed between Leavelle and fellow detective L. C. Graves. As he was being led through the basement of the Dallas Police Headquarters to an armored car, Oswald was shot at point-blank range by Jack Ruby. Leavelle prominently appeared in several famous photographs of the incident—including one that won a Pulitzer Prize. He later testified before the Warren Commission and would continue to refute any conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination.
Jack Ruby (1911-1967) was a Dallas nightclub owner, but is best known as the murderer of John F. Kennedy's assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. Ruby shot Oswald on November 24, 1963, as Oswald was being transferred to the county jail.
