Item Details
Description
This vintage poster, a captivating creation by the renowned Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, captures the vibrant spirit of the Moulin Rouge and the allure of the Parisian demi-monde. Measuring 34.5 inches by 25 inches, this color lithograph is both a work of art and a historical testament to the iconic cabaret scene of the late 19th century.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864 - 1901) was a prolific French artist known for his distinctive style that chronicled the nightlife, dancers, and performers of Paris. His artistic contributions include paintings, printmaking, and illustrations, making him a central figure in the Post-Impressionist and Art Nouveau movements.

The Moulin Rouge, a legendary Parisian cabaret that opened its doors in the late 19th century, sought to establish itself as the most luxurious and extravagant nightspot in the city. In line with this aspiration, Toulouse-Lautrec was commissioned to create a promotional poster for the establishment.

The focal point of the poster is the famous cancan dancer known by the stage name La Goulue, meaning "the glutton." La Goulue was the stage persona of Louise Weber, a laundress who migrated from the countryside to Paris in pursuit of fame and fortune. The poster also features "No-Bones" Valentin, another celebrated dancer of the Moulin Rouge.

The lithograph, titled "Moulin Rouge: La Goulue," is a vivid representation of the energy and excitement that characterized the cabaret's performances. Toulouse-Lautrec's masterful use of color and composition captures the dynamism of the dancers and the lively atmosphere of the Moulin Rouge.

Commissioned in 1891, this poster is a historical artifact that not only advertised the cabaret but also became a collectible piece of art. While many examples were pasted as advertising posters and subsequently lost, surviving copies, including this one, contribute to the cultural legacy of Toulouse-Lautrec and the iconic Moulin Rouge.
