Eight Victorian Constabulary Truncheons
All 19th Century
Each of hardwood, the first painted in polychrome and gilt against a blackened ground with crowned 'VR' within a garter belt, and with ribbed swelling grip (later leather thong mostly missing); the second of similar form, painted in polychrome and gilt with crowned 'VR' and stamped with crowned 'D' over '4' over 'INSP' (some crazing and loss of paint, grip chipped); the third painted in polychrome and gilt against a blackened ground with large crown over 'VR' cypher above a cartouche painted 'M.P', and stamped 'SR' over '28', and with ribbed swelling grip (some wear and loss of paint); the fourth of similar form to the last; the fifth painted in polychrome and gilt with crowned cypher over '142', and with tapering ribbed grip pierced for a thong (some old splits); the sixth of mallet form painted in polychrome with royal arms above 'V.R', and with ribbed swelling grip; the seventh painted in polychrome with crowned 'V.R' (grip terminal chipped); the last painted in polychrome against a blackened ground with crowned 'V.R' and 'Police', and with ribbed grip (8)
