His father recognized his ability early on and hired an art tutor for his son. Sawyier studied art extensively, including stints at the Cincinnati Art Academy and the Art Student's League in New York City. A stylistic eclectic, he often adapted aspects of Impressionism in his art but also painted in the moody, darker mode of American tonalism.
