Description
#1: Model of Anik 1 in metal [circa 1972-1975]. 3 1/2 inches long, 2 1/2 inches wide across the top, and 1 1/4 inches with a wing on each side each extending 10 1/2 inches and 2 inches wide. The satellite model is attached to an angled plexiglass construction which is then mounted on an oval wooden base 3/4 inches thick, 3 13/16 inches at its widest point and 4 7/16 inches at its longest point. On the base there is a plaque reading: "L'Honorable Gerard Pelletier / Ministre Des Communications / 1972 - 1975".
#2: Hughes Aircraft Company [circa 1972-1975]. Barrel shaped model in metal 2 3/4 inches high and 3 inches in diameter, mounted on a polished wood base 6 inches long and 3 1/2 inches wide. Lacking antenna on top.
Anik 1A was launched in 1972 as the world's first domestic communications satellite in order to transmit television signals from Canada's national broadcaster, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, to Arctic communities and to provide telephone service to the North.
Provenance: Owned by Gerard Pelletier, Minister of Communications in Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau's cabinet from 1972 to 1975. Purchased by consignor from a dealer in Montreal, who purchased them in Montreal at the auction of Minister Pelletier's estate.
