Yaacov Agam (Israeli, b. 1928). "Solune" agamograph (also known as a lenticular), 2007. Signed at lower right. Numbered 17/25 HC (hors commerce edition) at lower left. Yaacov Agam's "Solune" displays the Israeli artist's mastery of optical/kinetic art. Known as a Lenticular or an Agamograph, this artform uses optical illusion to create changes when the viewer's observes if from different angles. This piece's geometric motifs - both circular and linear - as well as its vibrant colors, and dynamically changing patterns, demonstrate Agam's blend of optical and kinetic illusions. A fabulous composition by Yaacov Agam, mounted in an attractive custom frame. Size (image): 11.875" L x 11.875" W (30.2 cm x 30.2 cm) Size (sheet): 14.625" L x 14.125" W (37.1 cm x 35.9 cm) Size (frame): 26.125" L x 26.125" W (66.4 cm x 66.4 cm)

Yaacov Agam studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem and also studied with Johannes Itten, a revered Bauhaus color theoretician. Raised in an Orthodox Jewish home, Agam was discouraged from pursuing art by his father who was a rabbi, and rather than defy the Orthodox prohibition of graven, idolic images, Agam elected to create non-objective, non-representational works that prompt the viewer to contemplate and interpret. Agam's artworks been compared to those of Victor Vasarely, Josef Albers, and Alexander Calder. Agamographs like the one featured in this lot have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Jewish Museum in New York City, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City where he was honored with a retrospective in 1980. In addition, the Yaacov Agam Museum of Art opened in September of 2016 in Rishon LeZion, Israel.

Please Note: An Hors Commerce or Hors d'Commerce (H.C.) Proof is a print that artists create to show to dealers and galleries as examples of their work. Hors Commerce or Hors d'Commerce is a French term that translates to "do not sell".
