Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, (Dine) Navajo, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. An area rug with heavy weave, handmade in hues of cream, brown, and red, with the main wool wefts woven over cotton warps. Section lines, the visible diagonal joins the weaver makes when working on different areas, are visible throughout this piece. Possibly Ganado or Klagetoh style. In Dine weaving tradition the deity, Spider Woman, taught the ancestral people to weave using a fantastical loom and materials made from the earth, lightning, and sky. Cotton was their main material for hundreds of years before the Spaniards' introduction of sheep. Size: 76" L x 53" W (193 cm x 134.6 cm)
