Description
Native American / First Nations, Northwest Coast United States, Alaska or Canada, Inupiaq/Inuit people, ca. mid-20th century CE. A whalebone sculpture carved from two pieces and attached at the center with adhesive. One side is a wolf / bear-like animal; ears perked and paws extended and from the other side a human face, framed by the contours of the bone. The base has what might be the faint initials for an unknown artist. Whale bone sculpture requires the use of older bone that has dried and ossified - new bone will splinter and be too oily to carve- hence the wonderfully aged and weathered appearance of these works. Size: 9.5" L x 8" W x 7.5" H (24.1 cm x 20.3 cm x 19 cm)
