Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast of Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A nicely preserved textile sash formed from tightly woven camelid fibers in hues of red, dark brown, and tan. The textile is decorated with a repeating register of steps alternating dark and light colors. Sashes like this were popular clothing items among the Nazca but were also used for more utilitarian purposes like carrying large objects. Size of largest fragment: 216" L x 3.375" W (548.6 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966
