Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A charming redware pottery vessel depicting a stylized coatimundi with a raised tail and a broad spout upon its back. The creature stands on 4 petite legs while raising its head to reveal raised ears and a tapered snout. It is unclear what the coatimundi symbolized in Colima artistry, so perhaps the artist held a particular fondness for the adorable quadruped. Size: 10.25" L x 4.7" W x 6.375" H (26 cm x 11.9 cm x 16.2 cm)

Provenance: private Charlotte, North Carolina, USA collection; ex-Marc Schmitt, Amiguet's Unusuals, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired May 2005; ex-Frank Stegmeier collection, Seattle, Washington, USA
