Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fine vermillion pottery vessel is in the form of an elongated squash with a body that is stylistically segmented with smooth, fine vertical ribbing, an example of a skeuomorph - a vessel that mimics another material! The indigenous of Mexico used hollowed gourds for storing and serving food and drink, thus sculpting the clay into the shape of a gourd was more permanent jar celebrating this special crop. Gourds and squashes were symbols of fertility and abundance, this unique form is a desirable type! Size: 4.5" Diameter x 8.75" H (11.4 cm x 22.2 cm)
