Early 19th century, a rare pencil made by J. Thoreau & Son, company ran by Henry David Thoreau and founded by his father, stamped J. THOREAU & SON. CONCORD MASS. flanked by a heart pierced by an arrow on either side, unsharpened, with old note related to the provenance dated 1964 reading, "This lead pencil was made by Thoreau. / Given me by D. Thulburg. / J. Borden [?] / (in a different hand:) For John Christie / from DaP / 9 Jan' 64'
