Description
Rare, possible early 19th century Spanish cannon of bronze with engraving on trunnions that reads "Cannon taken by Moros from earlier Spaniards to Philippines. Re-taken in Moro Wars by Captain Leonard Furlong P.C.C. 1909". Barrel has extensive detailing including crown, wreath, six point star and two dolphin handles. Set onto a mahogany cradle that is not original to cannon. Barrel is 36" long. *The "Moros" were the Mohammedan "Fighting men" who lived in the mountains of the southern islands of the Philippines. Captain Leonard Furlong was born in Philadelphia, came to Boston at an early age and was educated at the Dudley School. With regard to the Moros uprising he was respected for his distinguished service in the fields of battle and diplomacy. The Moros tribe still exists in the Philippines today. 36” long x 7” wide. Barrel has a 1 1/2” bore.
