The Great Wave is an oil on canvas painting based on Japanese artist Hokusai's 1831 woodblock print The Great Wave off Kanagawa. It depicts three boats in menacing waves with Mount Fuji in the background. The painter has simplified Hokusai's woodblock composition to focus on the shapes of the natural elements and forms that blend in with their surroundings. Initialed in red paint on upper left: S. P. III. Housed in a black frame with an off white mat. Sight sizes: 19"L x 13"H. Frame size: 28"L x 22.10"H x 0.80"W.
