Description
In addition to chuvals and torbas, the Tekke Turkmen also produced considerably smaller bags. Depending on their sizes, they are described as mafrash or kap. The same design was used for both formats. The division of space and the powerful style of drawing of the devices indicate that this mafrash was woven around 1800 or earlier. It was made in the area of the Akhal oasis, as shown by the light colours. Two white, upright rectangular panels containing a large tree are surrounded by a border of small boxes in diverse colours which contain small shrubs. The outer white-ground border is decorated with C-forms. The red ashik guls at the centre of the trees are woven entirely in wool.
Signs of age and wear, the foundation is visible in two places. Original upper finish, somewhat reduced at the bottom, the two upper corners are missing and have been replaced with a kilim weave. No kilim back.
