First half 19th century, 97 x 90 cm, Central Asia, West Turkestan
The field design of this very rare, square sitting rug consists of three rows of five Memling güls and chemche secondary motifs. Star-filled octagons outlined in rays are aligned in a row in the border; the elems are decorated with small, geometric stylised trees. A comparative example was first published by Thacher in 1940. – The original finishes are missing all around, signs of wear in the pile. Damaged sides, one stitched horizontal tear at the top left.
