Description
first half 19th century, 1350 x 29 cm, Central Asia, West Turkestan
HAMBURGISCHES MUSEUM FÜR VÖLKERKUNDE (publ.), Wie Blumen in der Wüste. Die Kultur der turkmenischen Nomadenstämme Zentralasiens. Hamburg 1993, no. 107
TSAREVA, ELENA, Turkmen Carpets. The Hoffmeister Collection. Stuttgart 2011, no. 163
Completely preserved, this tent band with pile-woven kibitka designs on a white, warp-faced plainweave wool foundation is very finely worked and meticulously drawn. A precise attribution to a tribe has not been possible to date. The palette and the style of some devices suggest that the band may have been woven either by the Saryk or Tekke.
Good condition.
Provenance: Peter Hoffmeister Collection, Dorfles-Esbach
