Description
Vagirehs are rug samplers that present various options for field and border designs at their original scale. They served to demonstrate to clients how a workshops own designs could be combined in a large-format carpet. Vagirehs from Kurdistan have survived in far greater numbers than from any other Persian region.
At first glance, this very beautiful Bijar vagireh appears like a rug with an asymmetrical design due to its narrow surrounding border. The large diamond-shaped medallion with attached pendants and an interior drawing of stems, rosettes and leaves is not centred in the light brown, shield-shaped field, but is offset to the left and top. The light yellow ground at the sides of the field is decorated with elongated hexagons. The spandrels display long angular stems. A red-ground, floral main border is portrayed at the lower end of the field. A large carpet measuring ca. 2 x 3 metres with motifs possibly supplied by a similar vagireh is published in the Discoveries from Kurdish Looms catalogue.
Slight signs of age and wear, good overall condition.
