Description
Sixth plate ambrotype. Housed in full leatherete case with repair.
An absolutely haunting post-mortem image of a deceased young man in repose. Taken from a distance, the subject's gaunt remains rest on a sturdy surface, which (along with the background) was covered almost entirely by a bright white sheet. Consequently, the subject is the clear focus for the viewer. His head, propped up with a pillow, evidences hollow cheeks that imply illness. Of particular interest are his feet, clad only in clean white socks in preparation for his interment. The condition of this image is near flawless, and it is housed in a full (but repaired) leatherette case. A top-shelf example of this genre of early photography.
