A full-page wood-cut memorial engraving title The Vacant Chair in the United States Senate published upon the death of abolitionist and Massachusetts senator Charles Sumner. His chair is draped in mourning fabrics, with a female figure placing a crown of laurels upon it. Several figures, including several Black figures, show respect and sadness at the loss. The back page features engraved scenes titled the Death of Charles Sumner - The Remains in New York, with the scenes: "Arrival of the Body at Jersey City," "Procession Up Broadway by Night," "The Casket at the Fifth Avenue Hotel," and "Arrival of the Hearse at the Grand Central Depot."
