Description
DESCRIPTION: Portraits of Claudius H. Mastin Sr. (1826-1898) and Mary Eliza McDowell (1829-1910) from 1881 in extraordinary oval-within-rectangle gilt frames. Nicola Marschall, Germany, U.S., Kentucky. Claudius and Mary Eliza were both born in Mobile, Alabama. Claudius was a surgeon during the Civil War attached to General Bragg. One of their sons was a major benefactor of the school of nursing in Alabama. CONDITION: Both are damaged. Tear to the male portrait at the ear and some frame damage. Tear to the female portrait at her lower left arm and losses to the plaster detail of the frame. Both paintings are unlined and have craquelure throughout. Dimensions: Framed size is 35" X 40" each.
