Description
NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION X-15A-2 Model. Mixed material on wood base, RetroRocket, no date, wingspan 6 3/4 inches, fuselage 15 1/4 inches, 10 3/4 inches tall, plaque on base reads: 'X-15A-2 / North American Aviation, Inc.' and with North American logo. The hypersonic rocket-powered X-15, a Mach 6 follow up to the Bell X-2, would go on to make history, setting speed and altitude records, becoming the first aircraft to fly into outer space and being flown by pilots such as future astronauts Neil Armstrong and Joe Engle. The present model, made for NASA by RetroRocket, is the second of three X-15s, modified with a longer fuselage and the addition of two jettisonable external fuel tanks. This example demonstrates the experimental ablative coating intended to mitigate the extreme heat from the friction encountered at high-Mach speeds.
