Description

George Catlin’s scarce and seminal early examination of Native Americans with all plates as called for. One of the most important works on the American Indian published in the 19th century. Catlin ventured among the Indians of the North American Plains, capturing in verbal and visual pictures every facet of their lives. He was basically the Audubon for Native Americans. 530pp in 2 volumes. Gilt page tops with fore-edges deckled. 312 colored numbered plates including 2 bound-in maps and a loose foldout of the United States. Of the 312, seven are not present as noted in Howes. (plates 23, 137, 142, 149, 159, 246 and 247, exactly as Howes notes). Howes notes that plates 113 and 114 are not present, but they are present in this set. Additionally, plates 101 1/2 and 210 ½ are present (Howes agrees) plus the three unnumbered plates after plate 65 are present, and two plates are bound out of order (252/253 and 309/310). No errata slip. A beautiful and essential work valued both for its observations and illustrations of the North American native peoples. Books appear to be rebound in the distant past while preserving much of the original publisher’s cloth. Coated with a covering that makes the original cloth blend almost perfectly with the new binding. Some spotting to covers, but tips, head and foot of spine and board edges are all completely intact. Tightly bound with solid hinges. A few pages have an occasional chip or short edge crack. A solid pair of books. 7 x 10.25
