Description
circa 1820-1825, attributed to Duncan Phyfe, New York, associated reeded marble top over a floating plinth and stepped cornice, columnar supports with floral molded gilt bronze capitals, mirrored doors, shelved interior, fitted secretary drawer with adjustable baize writing surface, pier table form base with shaped plinth and hairy paw feet, reverse stenciled with number "17478", 67-3/4 x 38 x 22-1/2 in.
Provenance: According to consignor notes, Chancellor Livingston, Livingston House, Hudson Valley, New York; Collection of Beverly and Richard Kelly of Garrison, New York
Note: The form and proportions of the secretary bookcase offered here are nearly identical, down to the dimensions, to a secretary attributed to Duncan Phyfe from the estate of Dr. Saul Jaiven of Stamford, Connecticut, illustrated in Duncan Phyfe, Master Cabinetmaker in New York by Peter Kenny, et al. (pl. 33, pg. 209). The configuration of the fitted secretary drawer matches several documented Phyfe examples, including a work table also illustrated by Kenny (fig. 168, pg. 133).
Condition
in a fine state of overall preservation, as noted, associated marble top, well restored finish retaining fine figuring and color, replaced mirror plates, cornice with some later blocking, veneer shrinkages throughout, some minor veneer repairs, base with minor veneer loss, feet appear to be all original with only minor surface losses, secretary drawer with later antique baize surface, secondary wood under bookcase with cracks (not visible unless uppercase removed), other scattered wear consistent with age and use
