HAMILTON, ALEXANDER, Captain. A New Account of the East Indies. giving an exact and copious description of the situation, product, manufactures, laws, customs, religion, trade, &c. of all the countries and islands which lie between the Cape of Good Hope and the island of Java. London: C. Hitch and A. Millar, 1744. The second London edition. Period brown calf, all edges sprinkled red. xxxii, 400 pp.; vii, 320 pp.; 8 maps and 11 plates, some folding, as called for. Joints starting on the first volume, some binding wear, generally a fresh copy internally, though the final leaf in the second volume is creased, and the terminal endpaper is lacking.
The work was first issued in Edinburgh in 1727, and there was a preceding London edition in 1739. The work covers "the whole of the Orient" (Hill) from Ethiopia to Japan. Cf. Hill (2004) 765; Howgego I, p. 477,
