Item Details
Description
This historic volume is Francis Leguat's A New Voyage to the East-Indies by Francis Leguat and His Companions. Containing their Adventures in two Desart Islands, And an Account of the most Remarkable Things in Maurice Island, Batavia, at the Cape of Good Hope, the Island of St. Helena, and other Places in their Way to and from the Desart Isles. Adorn'd with Maps and Figures. This first edition in English was published in 1708 in London by R. Bonwicke, W. Freeman, et al. The work features an engraved frontispiece and 28 (of 31) engraved plates. There are 248 pages of text as well as preface and index. It is bound in quarter brown calf, stamped in gilt, over marbled paper-covered boards.

Francis Leguat (1637-1735) was a French Huguenot who fled to Holland in 1689. The work details his story trying to begin a colony for French Protestant refugees. In 1690, Leguat and his companions boarded L'Hirondelle in Amsterdam to start the colony on Reunion Island, believing it abandoned by the French, but instead were marooned on the uninhabited island of Rodrigues. They spent a year there before attempting to reach Mauritius, finally arriving there in 1693. The surviving crew were jailed after conflicts with the governor and moved to Jakarta. Leguat and his two remaining companions returned to Europe in 1698, and Leguat lived his remaining years in England.
