inscribed Steamship 'Washington,' Capt. Fitch rescuing passengers of the ship 'Winchester' off Boston Tuesday, May 2, 1854. Mr. P. M. King, Chief Officer of the Washington, and 4 of the crew making the first trip to the wreck. Passengers saved 415. Crew 32. Total 447, verso
9 1/4 x 12 1/4 inches.

Possibly a prototype for the Currier and Ives engraving The Steam Ship Washington Capt Fitch, rescuing the passengers of the Ship Winchester of Boston, (Tuesday May 2nd 1854), first published in 1854.
Condition
Frame: 11 5/8 x 14 5/8 inches.
In overall good and stable condition. Foam core strip adhered to one vertical edge of board, with residue and associated paint loss from previously applied strips to remaining edges. Slight bumping to lower corners. Light deposits of dust and grime throughout surface. Few areas of inpainting visible throughout ocean, with errant drips of old varnish visible under UV light examination. Board retains manufacturer's printed paper label to verso.
