Description
[SINO-RUSSIAN RELATIONS, Late 19th Century.] Formal portrait of a reception with Manchurian officials and acting Russian Consul Petr Genrikhovich Tiedemann, c. 1898-1899. 11in x 8in. Inscribed verso: €Å“Manchurian Official [?] Reception for Acting Russia Consul,€Â with identification of Tiedemann and officials, including Viceroy Heu Ying Kuei. Condition: Overall good; some creasing, mostly at margins/edges; edge tears and losses, including one torn-off corner. PETR GENRIKHOVICH TIEDEMANN (1873-1941) was born in Kazan, Russia, the son of a nobleman of German Lutheran heritage. He was a graduate of the Department of Oriental Languages of the University of St. Petersburg. He served in the diplomatic service at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1895, as a student trainee with the Imperial Russian Diplomatic Mission in Peking (1896-1898), and he was in charge of the Russian Consulate in Foochow (1898-1899). Tiedemann continued in various diplomatic posts in China up to the 1930s. In 1937 he moved to Montreal, Canada, where he married Adelaida Mikhailovna Skriabin (?-1925), daughter of Full State Councilor M.D. Skriabin, Vice Governor of Lublin.
