Description
Roman, Pompeii, Republican Period, ca. early 1st century BCE. A cast-bronze amulet depicting a slender phallus on one and a clenched fist - with the forefinger holding the thumb underneath - extending in the opposite direction. This type of closed fist was a sign of mercy given to competitors in the Colosseum. Atop the midsection is the base for the original suspension ring, and below the midsection of the amulet is a set of petite testes. Smooth, dark green patina has developed across the entire artifact. Size: 1.72" L x 0.46" W x 0.65" H (4.4 cm x 1.2 cm x 1.7 cm)
