Description
Native American, Western United States, Plains region, likely Lakota / Dakota (Sioux), ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A large pipe bag made from a piece of hide sewn into a long rectangular shape, the upper half folded down as the lid / flap. Thousands of beads are land (lazy) stitched across the surface in geometric motifs and the tassels are wrapped with brightly dyed porcupine quills. Pipes and smoking tobacco were often stored in these special pouches during ceremonies. Size w/ tassels: 20.5" L x 8" W (52.1 cm x 20.3 cm) Size: 28.5" L x 8" W (72.4 cm x 20.3 cm)

Condition
Hide is stiff and brittle, fragile, tears and cracking. The flap is completely torn away along the fold and held in place by beaded threads, and very fragile. Losses to bead work to flap and peripheries of pouch, but most beadwork is intact and very good. Losses and frayign to quills.
