Description
Ian Reid / Nusi (First Nations / Canadian, Heiltsuk, b. 1978). "Heiltsuk Warrior" wood mask with horsehair, 2006. Signed with title and date on verso. An evocative wood mask titled "Heiltsuk Warrior" by First Nations artist Ian Reid, also known by his Heiltsuk name Nusi, meaning "Full Moon." Crowned by the hide of a horse with long, extending horsehair, the stylized vizard is adorned in red, green, and black painted designs representing both face paint and facial hair. Ian Reid is a Heiltsuk artist and cultural leader, born in 1978 in Bella Bella, British Columbia. Ian’s art is inspired by the cultural knowledge of Heiltsuk elders and enriched by his research into Heiltsuk and Northwest Coast art in museums in Europe and the USA. His mentors include the late Heiltsuk artist David Gladstone, the late Cyril Carpenter, and Kwakwaka’wakw artist Simon Dick. Size without hair: 7" W x 11.2" H (17.8 cm x 28.4 cm); with hair: 11" W x 49.2" H (27.9 cm x 125 cm)

Condition
Signed with Canadian and Heiltsuk names, as well as year and title on verso. Some natural, stable hairline surface fissures to wood; none of which are very noticeable or affect imagery. Otherwise, intact and excellent with suspension wire on verso for display.
