Description

GERMAN WWII U-BOAT SUBMARINE KILL FLAG U-57, 500 TONS
This is a 'Kill Flag' displayed on a German submarine upon returning to port after a successful mission. U-Boats would raise their kill flags to signify a triumphant mission, and the flag has roped eyelets (lanyards) at the top and bottom ends specifically for this purpose, allowing it to be proudly flown from the mast.
This kill flag is single-sided and shows minimal signs of wear, with the most notable wear found on the lanyards. Hand-painted notations '500' (indicating tonnage sunk) and 'U-57' are also present.
TEST: This particular item has passed a very important test: it does not glow under a black lamp. (Please note that all fabrics made after 1945 typically glow under black light). For further details, please refer to the images.

WIKIPEDIA: During World War II, U-boat warfare was the major component of the Battle of the Atlantic, which lasted the duration of the war. Germany had the largest submarine fleet of the revived German War Navy (Kriegsmarine) from 1935 into World War II (1939-1945), since the Armistice of November 11th, 1918 scuttled most of the old Imperial German Navy from the First World War and the following Treaty of Versailles of 1919. This limited the surface navy of Germany's new Weimar Republic to only six battleships (of less than 10,000 tons each), six cruisers, and 12 destroyers. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill later wrote "The only thing that really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril".
