Grant was born in the town of Rothiemurchus, near Inverness, Scotland, and studied art at the Slade School, as well as in Italy and Paris. He was a cousin of Lytton Strachey and, through his circle, Duncan became part of the Bloomsbury Group, where Maynard Keynes became one of his mistresses. Duncan's homosexual tendency was known, however he later maintained a relationship with Vanessa Bell, living with her and her family, two of her children from her since before the start of the First World War. In 1916 they moved to the town of Firle, in Sussex County, where they painted and decorated their house with their own paintings.
