SEKI FOR THE NOGAWA COMPANUY OF KYOTO
An Inlaid Iron Rectangular Box and Cover
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
Inlaid in typical Komai style of gold and silver inlay, the cover with a large gold-outlined lobed panel enclosing three karako (Chinese boys) on a boat floating on a lotus pond surrounded by lotus flowers in full bloom, one boy at the stern balancing the boat with a pole, his companions at the front picking lotus flowers, bordered by repeated fragmented key-fret and other foliate motifs, the sides of the box with smaller, differently-shaped panels enclosing assorted flowers and foliage, all reserved on a ground of shippo-hanabishi (flowery-diamond linked-jewels); signed on the base Kyoto Nogawa sei Seki tsukuru. 7.5cm x 20cm (3in x 7 7/8in). Condition
Including but not limited to the following:
Inlays original and intact. Gold rims slightly tarnished, silver interior oxidised. Front side edge of the box somewhat uneven and ever slightly warped causing the lid to not flush fit.
