Description
James Drummond Herbert (1896-1970). Two works in this lot. "Leonardo Ballet" & Apollo Ballet (Poussin-inspired). Medium: Oil on board. Both works are signed. Dimensions: 16" x 12" each. Both unframed. Artists such as Herbert entered a highly competitive and changing arena in American art in the 1920’s. What distinguished Herbert was his use of figures in highly dramatic settings showing his command for color as well as performance art. Here are two oil on board works showing Herbert's interest in mythological subjects for inspiration, an byproduct of his early training in France. This classical approach was popular with the French court painter, Nicolas Poussin, and demonstrates striking colors with an ordered composition with many references to Greek mythology. Herbert's subjects here are Apollo & Leonardo.James Herbert was a highly educated and privileged artist born in New York City, who lived in Manhattan and studied at Columbia University during his youth. He attended the Art Students League of New York from 1920-1923, and again from 1926-1929. He became a member of the Society of Illustrators and went on to do commercial work for advertisers and fashion magazine. He later relocated in 1947 to Providence, RI to teach at the Rhode Island School of Design and become a member of the Providence Art Club and Newport Art Association.
