Partial label on stretcher indicates the scene is near Berwyn, Maryland, probably showing Paint Branch tributary. The part of the label with the artist's name is torn away, what remains is : "Artist - Mrs. H. P. (paper missing) Mrs. Middleton's mother, Born 1838, Died (missing)" From what can be seen of the label, the painting is dedicated in 1940 to someone who nursed the giver's mother, Mrs. Middleton, during a long illness. Two small tears at lower portion of canvas. Gilt frame, approx 58" x 42". Sight, approx. 51 3/4" x 35 3/4".
