This elaborate and profusely illustrated study was an important spur to development of the West's natural resources and led to further settlement. Includes the rare and highly sought-after mammoth atlas, one of several which accompanied King's seminal seven-volume report on the geology of the western states. Volume III is an important monograph on mining in the western states, including much on the Comstock Lode and other mining operations in Nevada (atlas to accompany this volume not included). Included in the atlas is a general map of the American West, and maps of five regions, both geological in color, and topographical in duotone. Light binding wear (more to vols. VI-VII, with hinges shaken), gentle toning and offsetting of plates, occasional minor dampstains; vol. VII folding plates foxing and reinforced on verso; atlas with some general edgewear and soiling, usually not affecting contents, original wrappers quite worn; overall, much better than usually seen, a very good to near fine set.
