Description
TIGHT ROPE WALKING OVER NIAGARA. A lot of 6 stereos sold together. Various photographers: S.C. Northrop (New Haven, Conn.); Universal Stereoscopic Co. (New York); Geo. Stacy; G.W. Thorne (New York); American Stereoscopic Company (New York). Mounted on cardstock, with captions. Including a view of Maria Spelterini crossing the rapids; she was an Italian tightrope walker and was the only woman to cross the Niagara gorge on a tightrope, which she did 5 times during July of 1876. The presence of peach baskets strapped to her ankles in the photo suggests that the photo was taken during her July 12th trip across the rapids. Other views include one of French tightrope walker Charles Blondin, apparently carrying someone on his back, who may be his manager, Harry Colcord; allegedly, halfway during the performance, Blondin sat down to cook and eat an omelette ("Blondin" pencilled on verso, with ex libris stamp of Allen E. Thomas). Another stereo shows Clifford Calverley [sic] crossing the gorge (stereo curved). Others: "No. 92: Tight Rope Performance over the Rapids," showing a man crossing the rapids; one other showing view of the falls with people in a boat watching a figure cross the rapids above. Generally good condition, various imperfections: Speltrini stereo sunned/fading, with some marks, small indentations and chip to tops of prints; Blondin stereo also sunned, less so, with occasional marks on prints. *Additional images and detailed condition report available upon request.
