Description
Native American / First Nations, Northwest Coast United States, Alaska or Canada, Inupiaq / Inuit people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. An assortment of carved animal figurines displayed atop a flattened piece of whale bone. The seal and large bird are made of soapstone, and the other rodent and bear animals are almost entirely carved from walrus tusk ivory except for the sitting rabbit which is bone. It is unclear if all carvings are original to this whale bone base and some may have been held in place with pegs or glued to the surface, however all carvings are loose and not attached, so they can be arranged as one desires. Size of whalebone: 12.75" L x 9.5" W x 2" H (32.4 cm x 24.1 cm x 5.1 cm); bird: 1" W x 2.5" H (2.5 cm x 6.4 cm)
